Riley Donovan and Shea Moreno each slugged their sixth home runs to co-lead the state as College of San Mateo (14-1) swept visiting American River, 5-2, and College of the Redwoods, 17-3, in non-league softball games over the Presidents Day weekend.

College of San Mateo opened the 2020 women’s softball season in impressive fashion at the Bakersfield Invitational on Friday, sweeping Santiago Canyon and host Bakersfield College, both by 9-0 scores in abbreviated 5-inning (mercy-rule) games. Freshman Shea Moreno and sophomore all-stater Amanda Weitenhagen slugged home runs.

College of San Mateo came into regional play Saturday with the longest winning streaks in the state among more than 170 softball and baseball teams — along with track’s fastest woman sprinter. The numbers changed dramatically — but the outcome was positive, as the Bulldogs moved on in state competition.

The state-leading College of San Mateo softball win streak has reached 31 games the way it started – with a convincing 7-1 win over visiting Solano College Friday in a first round California Community College Athletic Association regional playoff. The best of three series continues on Saturday at noon (with a third game to follow, if needed). The initial game in the win skein was on Feb. 19 at Solano,, 8-0, in a mercy-rule 6-inning contest.

With more than a hundred California Community Colleges currently fielding sports teams, the top-ranked CSM women’s softball team has a pacesetting 30 game winning streak while the men’s baseball team leads Northern California with an 11-game skein (second longest in the state). Liao was a standout at the Coast Conference women’s track and field championships at De Anza College Saturday, and in the men’s championships, Serra grad Elijah Folau became the ninth straight Bulldog to win the Coast shot put title, throwing 48 feet, 4 inches.

A leadoff double by Aubrie Businger, followed by an RBI single by Ally Sarabia, was all College of San Mateo needed to score a crucial 1-0 non-league softball victory at San Joaquin Delta College Saturday.

Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen didn’t waste any time starting April in the same fashion as March. The College of San Mateo freshman outfielder smacked her ninth home run on Tuesday to cap the state top-ranked Bulldogs’ 4-1 win over visiting Cabrillo College and extend their state-leading winning streak to 22 games.

Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen had four hits and four RBIs as College of San Mateo increased the state’s best softball record to 26-2 with a doubleheader sweep over host Merced College, 6-0 and 5-1, on Sunday. CSM has outscored opponents in March by a 140-6 margin while extending the state’s longest winning streak to 19 games.

Following a spectacular 8-victory, 76-run start to the month, College of San Mateo’s softball team is in full ”March Madness” form, leading the state’s 85 community college teams in most categories.

Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen has hit back-to-back grand slam home runs for College of San Mateo’s softball team, a fete seldom accomplished at any level of the sport. Longtime CSM coach (and former player) Nicole Borg could not recall ever seeing that accomplished.
