San Mateo, CA; March 28, 2008—College of San Mateo Counselor and Professor Modesta Garcia received an award at the recent 2008 Harvard Alumni Association Leadership Conference, a worldwide event in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sponsored by Harvard University.

Michelle Brown, an associate professor of broadcast & electronic media at College of San Mateo, was recognized recently for her cinematography and editing on “Slippery Shiny Feathery Things” at The Berkeley Video & Film Festival 2007.

Dr. Susan Estes is College of San Mateo’s new vice president of instruction. At its meeting last Wednesday night, the San Mateo County Community College District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Estes for the high-level administrator position and CSM’s former dean of language arts will begin her new responsibilities on July 1.

Chancellor-Emeritus Lois A. Callahan died February 18 following a sudden illness. Dr. Callahan was widely recognized as one of the outstanding educators in California, and was one of the first women in America named to be president of a large college. She was 75 years old.

College of San Mateo is proud to host a Fulbright Scholar in Residence from Japan, Dr. Yukio Tsuda, during the spring semester. Possessing a Ph.D. in communication studies from Southern Illinois University, he will teach Speech Communication 150, Intercultural Communication, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, on Wednesday evenings at CSM.
