Track & Field Press Releases

Reigning state sprint champion Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao of College of San Mateo won her first 100 meter race of the season in impressive fashion in 12.18 seconds at the Chabot College Relays in Hayward on Friday. The time was just .01 off the early season state lead.

Defending state sprint champion Yan-Jun “Sophie” Liao made an auspicious 2020 debut for College of San Mateo with an easy win at 400 meters in 59.70 seconds at the Monterey Peninsula Open Track Invitational Saturday. It is the top early season California Community College mark — by nearly two seconds.

The greatest woman athlete? Bay Area sports fans will have a unique chance to weigh in on that subject over the next two weekends when “candidates” appear in Silicon Valley.

The California Community College Athletic Association state track and field championship meet from College of San Mateo is airing on ELEVEN SPORTS USA. The final 2-and-a-half hours of the May 18 competition, including sprint finals and team results, is included in the special telecast.

Host College of San Mateo crowned three women state champions and finished sixth at  the California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at College Heights Stadium.

The Sophie Liao show is set for three state championship performances Saturday afternoon at College of San Mateo. CSM will have a strong field event contingent at home for the state finals, led by NorCal women’s javelin throw champion Taina Livai.

College of San Mateo came into regional play Saturday with the longest winning streaks in the state among more than 170 softball and baseball teams — along with track’s fastest woman sprinter. The numbers changed dramatically — but the outcome was positive, as the Bulldogs moved on in state competition.

With more than a hundred California Community Colleges currently fielding sports teams, the top-ranked CSM women’s softball team has a pacesetting 30 game winning streak while the men’s baseball team leads Northern California with an 11-game skein (second longest in the state). Liao was a standout at the Coast Conference women’s track and field championships at De Anza College Saturday, and in the men’s championships, Serra grad Elijah Folau became the ninth straight Bulldog to win the Coast shot put title, throwing 48 feet, 4 inches.

Taina Livai had the state’s No. 2 women’s javelin throw, 129 feet, 9 inches, in the final regular season track and field meet for College of San Mateo on Thursday. It improved the sophomore’s own Northern California lead by more than four feet heading into next week’s Coast Conference Championships at De Anza College. Livai also won the women’s shot put at 38-4 1/4 to move into the No. 9 spot in state rankings and take the CSM season lead from Teme Fanguna, who placed second at 36-4 3/4. (Faguna’s season best is 37-3 3/4.) Emily Chiesa also had a personal best javelin throw of 97-10 to place fourth.

Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao ran her first 400 meter race in three years and breezed to an easy win in 59.74 seconds at College of San Mateo’s Mini Open meet Friday afternoon. That time ranks the CSM freshman from Foster City No. 15 in the state, complimenting her leading/No. 1 legal 100 meter time of 11.92 and her slightly wind-aided 200 time of 24.72 (which is No. 4 for all conditions).
