The magic number to claim an official state football championship appears to be 99. After falling just short in season No. 98, College of San Mateo will have to wait at least another year. Riverside City College, in its 99th year of community college football, took advantage of Bulldogs errors on Saturday to win its first California Community College Athletic Association title, 31-14, at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium.

SAN MATEO – After allowing visiting Fresno City College an early field goal, College of San Mateo responded within a minute to take the lead and then rolled off 31 unanswered points behind freshman quarterback Terrell Carter (166 total yards) and sophomore running back Cameron Taylor (88 yards). The state No. 8 ranked Bulldogs (3-1) had a 6-0 turnover advantage in the 31-3 non-league victory over the No. 17 Rams (1-2).
