It is the top early season California Community College mark — by nearly two seconds.

College of San Mateo opened the 2020 women’s softball season in impressive fashion at the Bakersfield Invitational on Friday, sweeping Santiago Canyon and host Bakersfield College, both by 9-0 scores in abbreviated 5-inning (mercy-rule) games. Freshman Shea Moreno and sophomore all-stater Amanda Weitenhagen slugged home runs.

Bobby Arenas sank a College of San Mateo record nine 3-point baskets and scored 28 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 81-70 Coast Conference North men’s basketball victory over visiting Foothill College Wednesday evening at College Heights gymnasium.

The magic number to claim an official state football championship appears to be 99. After falling just short in season No. 98, College of San Mateo will have to wait at least another year. Riverside City College, in its 99th year of community college football, took advantage of Bulldogs errors on Saturday to win its first California Community College Athletic Association title, 31-14, at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium.

The least likely team to appear in the finals of the 53rd Annual Gladiator Basketball Tournament at Chabot College trailed the state No. 24 ranked host team by just a single point with 26 seconds left in the title game Saturday night. College of San Mateo’s reinstituted men’s basketball program established several firsts just to reach the tourney finals. They won their first game, 94-89, over College of Alameda in the tourney opener. The Bulldogs took care of Porterville College, 91-88, in overtime in the semifinals – the first back-to-back wins for the program since the disbanded former program accomplished that in December of 1978.

Perhaps the oldest losing skein in college basketball has ended. College of San Mateo opened the 53rd annual Gladiator Classic Basketball Tournament at Chabot College Thursday with a 94-89 win over College of Alameda for the first victory of the reinstituted Bulldogs program, which had not won a game in 37 years.
