Coast Conference Champions Hana Wong and Joey Maffei are College of San Mateo’s qualifiers for the California Community College Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday through Saturday (May 2-4) at De Anza College in Cupertino.

Two-time Super Bowl winner Julian Edelman and Major League Baseball Hall of Fame announcer Jon Miller are among the 18 inductees for College of San Mateo’s fourth Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018. Tickets to the 6 p.m. dinner event are now available to the public.

College of San Mateo’s Erica Vong was the women’s swimmer of the year at the California Community College Athletic Association championships after breaking state meet records in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events.

Erica Vong won the California Community College Athletic Association championship in the 100-yard backstroke Friday and then led the Bulldogs to the 200-meter medley relay championship Friday — the school’s first California Community College Athletic Association women’s relay title. San Mateo set a Coast Conference record with its time of 1 minute, 47.71 seconds in the finals at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.

“This was a historic day for CSM swimming,” said coach Randy Wright. “Travis became the first diving champion. Erica won her off event and then set a state record in the 100 back. And we narrowly missed winning CSM’s first relay title. The girls want to win the 200 medley relay on Friday. It’s clear this team is not satisfied yet after today’s success.”

Russo and Vong have strong performances Saturday for CSM. CSM Baseball wins its tenth game in a row. CSM Softball battles at the top of the Coast North Conference. CSM set to host Bob Rush Invitational on April 20th.

Morgan Smith became College of San Mateo’s second women’s swimming champion in as many days Saturday, coming on strong in the final 50 yards to win the 200 yard butterfly at the California Community College Athletic Association Championships at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.

Freshman Erica Vong won College of San Mateo’s first ever women’s state swimming title Friday, taking the 100 yard backstroke in a near record 54.93 seconds at the California Community College Athletic Association championships at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. She just missed, by .07, the state record of 54.86.

All six of College of San Mateo’s women’s and men’s spring sports teams will be involved in California Community College Athletic Association playoff/championship activities this weekend (May 5-8).

Erica Vong won the high point award as the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer, finishing first in all three (individual) events. Erica did it again. She set the conference record in the 200 back. She now holds conference records in the 50, 100 and 200 back.
