Evan McDaniel placed seventh in the men’s discus throw for College of San Mateo’s top performance on the first day of the California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine, and a pioneer of the civil rights movement, will deliver the commencement address at College of San Mateo’s graduation ceremony on Friday, May 25. This year’s ceremony is a historic milestone as the college celebrates its 90th anniversary and honors the 90th graduating class of College of San Mateo.

The Bulldogs will host four Northern California championship and state qualifying events at the same time – men’s and women’s track and field, men’s baseball and women’s softball. Those are the final home events of the 90th season of sports for the local two-year college.

Mikala Conlin’s two-run homer in the first inning was all College of San Mateo needed as the Bulldogs went on to take an 8-0 women’s softball victory over visiting American River College on Sunday. The 5-inning game (shortened due to the 8-run margin) gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 sweep of the opening California Community College Athletic Association regional playoff series.

Brandon Defazio slugged College of San Mateo’s first grand slam home run of the season to break open a scoreless game in the fifth inning and propel the host Bulldogs to a 10-1 victory over Cabrillo College in the opener of a California Community College Athletic Association first round regional baseball tournament game Saturday afternoon.

Vika Kafoa drew a bases loaded walk on a 3-0 count with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give College of San Mateo a 2-1 walkoff victory over visiting American River College in Saturday’s California Community College Athletic Association regional women’s softball opener.

Roman Skovronski was the leading qualifier in the men’s 400 meter hurdles and all of College of San Mateo’s Coast Conference throwing champions made the finals field at the Northern California Community College Track and Field Trials, which the Bulldogs hosted Friday. The NorCal Championships will be held at CSM’s College Heights Stadium on Friday, May 11, with field events starting at 10 a.m. and track events at 1 pm.

The focus will be on speed and strength at Friday’s (May 4) Northern California Community College Track and Field Trials at College of San Mateo’s College Heights Stadium — to kickoff a full weekend of championship sports activity.
