Sarabia Homers; McAdams Wins #27
Top-Ranked CSM Softball Streaks to #31 with 7-1 Opening Playoff Win Over Solano

SAN MATEO – The state-leading College of San Mateo softball win streak has reached 31 games the way it started – with a convincing 7-1 win over visiting Solano College Friday in a first round California Community College Athletic Association regional playoff. The best of three series continues on Saturday at noon (with a third game to follow, if needed). The initial game in the win skein was on Feb. 19 at Solano,, 8-0, in a mercy-rule 6-inning contest.

State No. 1 ranked San Mateo (38-2) came within one hit of ending it in the same fashion on Friday, leaving the walk-off run stranded on second base after a 2-run homer over the left centerfield fence by Ally Sarabia. That was followed by an Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen double to bring home Kate Grech with the fourth run of the frame. Bay Valley Conference champion Solano is now 21-14.

The Coast North champion Bulldogs got all of the runs they needed at the outset on Friday, following a single by leadoff hitter Aubrie Businger. After Weitenhagen walked, throwing errors allowed Businger to score the first run. Riley Donovan then doubled home Weitenhagen for a 2-0 margin that would have sufficed.

A sacrifice fly by Donovan in the third frame brought home Grech, who had singled, with the game’s third run.

Hailey Hiett started the sixth inning with a single and stole second. Bella Zalba doubled to put runners on second and third. Hiett came home on an RBI ground out by Businger.

Emily McAdams (27-1) went the distance and leads the state with 27 wins. She had 11 strikeouts and walked just two batters.

Solano rallied to score its only run in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Caitlin Aston to tally Britney Czelusniak before McAdams ended it with a strikeout and a pop-out to short.
