Freddy Sanchez, Nate Schierholtz, CJ Wilson, Colby Lewis Pace CCC Star Roster:

TOP WORLD SERIES PLAYERS & BROADCASTERS HAVE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROOTS

Compiled for the California Community College Athletic Association & California Community College Baseball Coaches Association by Fred Baer, Director of CCCBCA Statistics

ESPN Broadcasters and Baseball Hall of Fame members Jon Miller, out of College of San Mateo, and Joe Morgan, from Oakland’s Merritt College, have several other former California Community College Athletic Association students to talk about during the 2010 World Series.

Two starting Texas pitchers from California CC’s (plus a third in reserve) are taking on a pair of San Francisco hitters in the Fall Classic:

— Texas second and third game pitchers C.J.Wilson (Santa Ana College) and Colby Lewis (Bakersfield College).

— San Francisco Series opening game hero Freddy Sanchez (Glendale College) and outfielder Nate Schierholtz (Hayward’s Chabot College).

Two other notable players on the World Series 40-man rosters are: Rangers’ season-opening starter Scott Feldman (College of San Mateo) and San Francisco’s Barry Zito (Los Angeles Pierce College).  (Feldman had gone on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee bone bruise on August 23.)

Lewis gave Texas its first ever World Series win in Game 3.  Wilson was the Game 2 loser, despite giving up only 2 runs (both earned) over 6 innings.   A 15-game winner during the regular season, Wilson is scheduled to start again in (a possible) Game 6 on Wednesday.

Sanchez keyed the Giants’ win in the Fall Classic opener and equaled a Giants World Series single-game record with four hits.  He set a World Series record with three doubles in his first three career WS at-bats.  Schierholtz recorded his first career postseason RBI in the same game.

ADDED NOTE ON MLB RECORD SETTER DANIEL NAVA:

Note: The compilation of California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Statistics for 87 member college teams is made possible by a grant to the CCCAA by Major League Baseball — which recognizes the important role CCCAA student-athletes play in baseball.
