Bulldogs Begin Coast North Play Wed. at Skyline:
CSM Women’s Basketball tops De Anza in 2 OT’S, 95-92

Megan Jajeh had 24 points and Ziyah Starks scored 23 as College of San Mateo pulled off a dramatic 95-92 double overtime victory over Coast Conference foe De Anza College in the San Jose City College women’s basketball tournament on Thursday (Dec. 28).

The Lady Bulldogs outscored De Anza, 23-19, in the fourth quarter to knot the count at 70 and send it to overtime. Each team had ten points in the first extra period before San Mateo pulled away in the second OT. De Anza had gotten off to a 21-17 start in the first quarter before the Bulldogs rallied to tie it at 36 at halftime.

Kyana Wiley had 14 rebounds and 18 points. Uhna Nauer also had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Kaitlyn Tamondong added 12 assists. She leads the Coast North in assists with a 5.5 season average (No. 5 in the state) and averages 2.3 steals per game.

CSM bounced back from a tournament opening 99-59 loss to state No. 6 ranked Fresno City College.

In Friday’s consolation finals, Southern California visitor Pasadena held off CSM’s 23-14 fourth period rally for a 1-point, 69-68, triumph.

–Starks had an outstanding tournament, bettering the 20-point mark in all three games for a total of 66 points. The freshman boosted her team-leading season scoring average to 14.5 (No. 4 in the Coast North). Wiley had 31 rebounds in the tourney and is averaging 10.6 for the season, No. 2 in the conference (just .1 off the lead). She is also scoring in double figures at 11.8.

–San Mateo will take 4-11 record into its Coast North opener at rival Skyline College (7-9) Wednesday (Jan. 3) at 5 p.m. in San Bruno. The home conference opener is on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ohlone.
