College of San Mateo easily won the rematch of last year’s Northern California Championship football game – on the road in Reedley Saturday night.
The undefeated Bulldogs (2-0), ranked fourth nationally and No. 3 in the state, rolled over Reedley College, 51-10, in a record-setting effort, running up the highest score among all of Northern California’s 34 teams over the weekend. Defending Valley Conference co-champion Reedley, ranked No. 16 among California’s 71 teams, is now off to a 0-2 start — also losing its opener at Foothill, 23-21.
The Bulldogs rolled for a school record 459 yards (with 11 ball carriers), bettering the old mark of 431 yards against Solano in 2006. San Mateo had 554 total yards and 31 first downs, while holding Reedley to 281 yards (and just 14 first downs).
CSM took an early 7-0 lead on Therman McGowan’s 11-yard touchdown run five minutes into the game.
Rashaan Vaughn caught TD passes on consecutive second quarter drives from starting QB Julian Bernard (16 yards) and back-up Miles Freeman (15 yards). Bernard (from Terra Nova high) also threw a 17-yard scoring strike to Antoine Turner (El Camino) in that period as the Bulldogs rolled to a 30-3 lead at the intermission.
Tim Celestine (Tracy) fielded the second half kickoff a few steps into the end zone and returned it the collegiate “maximum” of 100 yards for a score to etch his name into the CSM record book and quickly make it 37-3.
Leading 44-3 after three quarters, San Mateo coach Bret Pollack tried to slow the onslaught. But Freeman answered Reedley’s lone TD, at the start of the fourth quarter. Following Celestine’s 14-yard kickoff return, Freeman ran 74 yards on the first scrimmage play for the final score with 11:46 remaining. Freeman (from Luther Burbank, Sacramento) finished with 13 carries for 146 yards, running the Bulldogs option attack most of the second half.
The two CSM signal callers totaled 213 rushing yards (and just 95 passing).
Vaughn (out of Washington, Fremont) led San Mateo receivers with six catches for 66 yards.
Burlingame grad Brandon Francesconi intercepted a pass and had five tackles for CSM. Justin Sagote (Wilcox) led the Bulldogs with six tackles and Sosaia Mataele (San Mateo) had five unassisted tackles. James McCollough (Palo Alto) also had five total tackles.
CSM continues pre-conference play Saturday at West Valley College at 6:30 p.m. (Saratoga High School stadium).
