Bulldogs to host Fresno, Sacramento, San Jose in tourney:

CSM WINS BASEBALL PLAYOFF SERIES; NOW TOP SEED FOR SUPER REGIONALS

Sunday’s 13-6 victory over visiting Sierra College has propelled College of San Mateo ’s baseball team to the top seed for next weekend’s Super Regionals of the California Community College Athletic Association’s northern regional playoffs at home.

Centerfielder Justin Maffei nearly hit for the cycle, going 3 for 3, scoring four runs, with four RBI.

After being hit by a pitch to become CSM’s first baserunner and scoring the first run in the initial frame, Maffei had a 2-RBI single in the second inning to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead they never relinquished.  He added a triple in the fourth and a home run in the seventh.  Maffei, a freshman out of Serra High, either drove in a run or scored on all five of his at bats (including a walk in the sixth that ended up being his third run).

Starting pitcher Joshua Saio got the win, remaining perfect on the season at 5-0, giving up six hits and three earned runs over seven innings.  State E.R.A. leader Justin Burns pitched the final two frames for San Mateo , allowing just a 2-out solo homer in the ninth before getting the next batter to groundout to second to end it.

CSM came back from a first game loss to Sierra on Friday to win a 14-inning marathon on Saturday, 16-14, and then take the extended best-of-three series on Sunday.

SUPER REGIONALS:  The Bulldogs ( 29-8-1 ) will host Golden Gate rival San Jose City College (22-18) in Friday’s Super Regional first game, followed by a contest between Big 8 champion Sacramento City College (23-15) and Central Valley champion Fresno City College (30-8).  The double elimination tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday at the CSM baseball diamond.

San Jose eliminated former top seed Canada in another playoff series opening series over the weekend.
