San Mateo, CA; April 24, 2007—Attracting future college and professional players, the Unity Among Brothers (UAB) Basketball Tournament at College of San Mateo (CSM) will be held June 1 and 2 in the campus gymnasium. UAB is a student organization at CSM and raises funds for the North Central San Mateo Twilight Basketball Youth Crime Prevention Program with the tournament.

“We’re doing this to raise money for a great cause and it’s also a community, family-type activity, bringing everyone together for fun and entertainment,” said CSM Ethnic Studies professor Dr. Zelte Crawford, who has been coordinating the event for 15 years.

Plus, he added, the tournament has star appeal and attracts highly competitive teams.

“This is a rare opportunity to see pros and street ballers on the same court,” Crawford said. “In the past, Jason Kidd, Hook Mitchell, Headache and others have dazzled the crowds with their skills. This year, we expect college and professional scouts to also be there, along with referees from a number of major college conferences.”

“Braggin Rights” is the theme of this year’s tournament, which has been won the last two years by “The Posse” from San Jose.

Entry forms are now being accepted. The team entry fee before May 7 is $250.  After that date, the fee is $300. Players must be at least 18 years old. The tournament is limited to eight teams.

“The event offers an opportunity for students and participants to network with local business people,” Crawford said. “We encourage businesses and other organizations to support the effort with donations or by sponsoring teams, providing promotional gear and equipment, or furnishing refreshments.”

UAB is a CSM student organization that promotes positive thinking and concern for others, and supports the ideas of self-esteem, unity, and cooperation among all people—especially among African-American males.
