San Mateo, CA; April 30, 2007—

Among the many quality free-and-open-to-the-public events at CSM, today I’m writing to you about three particularly dynamic ones that are taking place on campus over the next few weeks:

  • May 2: “The Classic R&B Revue” (Lecture/ Concert ) featuring CSM’s own professor Rudy Ramirez, an accomplished guitarist
  • May 4: A Guest Lecture by Renowned Physicist David Peat
  • May 18: A Special Presentation by Josh Waitzkin (His story was featured in the movie, “Searching for Bobby Fischer, “ and he’s now Tai Chi Chuan World Champion.)

Almost two months ago, I sent a press release that included many CSM events for possible inclusion in your calendar sections. The list included these three. Although a calendar listing is most certainly appreciated, I’m sending along information now to interest you in attending and reporting on the three events or perhaps writing pre-event stories.

Here’s some information for that purpose:

1. “The Classic R&B Revue”

Ramirez may be reached at 650.574.6372. Also, a photo or photos are available upon request.
Ramirez will describe the history of R&B, some of the protagonists, as well as perform music from the 50s and 60s. Besides the excellent guitar playing of Ramirez, this event will feature Rusty Sterling & Friends. This event is sponsored by CSM’s Diversity in Action Group.

2. A Special College Event
Guest lecturer David Peat
Lecture topic: “David Bohm: A physicist’s quest for Wholeness”

Peat will speak about physicist David Bohm, a quantum physicist who made significant contributions in the fields of theoretical physics, philosophy and neuropsychology. He also contributed to the Manhattan Project, the project to develop the first nuclear weapon (atom bomb) during World War II by the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Peat said he will also discuss Bohm’s later attempt to reconcile relativity and quantum theory by discovering “a new order to physics” and how this probably came about during a long series of letters with the painter Charles Biderman about Cezanne’s search for a new order in painting, where the whole was contained in each part. Peat, who holds a Ph.D. in physics, is a holistic physicist and author of many books. He has carried out research in solid state physics and the foundation of quantum theory. For many years he was associated with physicist and philosopher Bohm. The biographical information above was extracted from Wikipedia articles on Bohm and Peat.

3. Josh Waitzkin presents at CSM

Josh Waitzkin took up chess at the age of six and won his first National Championship at age nine. After dominating the U.S. scholastic chess world for the next 10 years, Waitzkin took his ambitions beyond the 64 squares; he became a master of Tai Chi Chuan, eventually earning the title of World Champion. In his new book, “The Art of Learning – A Journey in the Pursuit of Excellence,” Waitzkin looks back at his accomplishments, revealing how he managed to become an iconic figure in two very different fields of competition – one for the mind and one for the body.
